Head Greenskeeper/Gardener - Private Marin Residence

Job Summary:

The Gardener is responsible for designing, planting, and maintaining a variety of garden beds and the garden greenhouse environment. This role includes planning and executing seasonal planting schedules, managing soil health, controlling pests, and ensuring proper irrigation. The Gardener will oversee the greenhouse operations, including climate control, plant propagation, and equipment maintenance. Additionally, they will care for crops and flowers, harvest produce, and work closely with the Chef to prepare harvested items. The Gardener will also perform general maintenance tasks, plan and execute special projects, and provide education and advisory services on sustainable gardening practices.

1. Garden Management:

● Design, plant, and maintain garden beds for vegetables, herbs, flowers and other plants.

● Plan and execute seasonal planting schedules.

● Manage soil health, including testing, fertilization and amendment.

● Control weeds and pests using integrated pest management techniques.

● Ensure proper watering and irrigation of garden areas.

2. Greenhouse Management:

● Oversee the operation and maintenance of the greenhouse, including climate control (temperature, humidity, ventilation) and light levels.

● Plan and execute greenhouse planting schedules for crops and flowers.

● Manage plant propagation and transplanting.

● Monitor and maintain greenhouse equipment and systems, such as heating, cooling, and irrigation systems.

● Implement pest and disease control measures within the greenhouse environment.

3. Crop and Flower Care:

● Grow a variety of crops and flowers from seeds or seedlings.

● Ensure proper care and nutrition for plants, including pruning, staking and training as needed.

● Monitor plant health, address issues such as pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies, and use natural or organic remedies when possible.

● Implement sustainable gardening practices to minimize environmental impact.

4. Harvesting and Post-Harvest Management:

● Harvest crops, fruits, and flowers at peak maturity to ensure optimal quality and yield.

● Handle and store harvested produce properly to prevent spoilage or damage.

● Maintain records of harvest yields and manage inventory of harvested products.

● Work with the Chef to prepare produce and herbs for consumption, including preparing, cleaning, packaging and labeling as required.

5. General Maintenance:

● Perform routine maintenance tasks such as weeding, mulching and composting.

● Ensure garden tools and equipment are well-maintained and in working order.

● Maintain cleanliness and organization in both garden and greenhouse areas.

6. Seasonal and Special Projects:

● Plan and execute seasonal projects or special garden installations, such as flower displays, vegetable patches, or themed garden areas.

● Assist with garden design and layout planning for new projects or renovations.

7. Education and Advisory:

● Provide guidance and advice on plant care, gardening techniques and pest management.

● Stay informed about new gardening practices, tools and technologies.

● Educate others about sustainable gardening practices and plant care.

Qualifications:

- At least 5 years of experience in gardening, horticulture, or related fields.

- Strong knowledge of plant care, soil health, pest management, and organic gardening techniques.

- Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work closely with another gardener.

- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.

- Physical stamina and the ability to work in outdoor conditions.
