Days:   Marin: Every Monday and Thursday and planning day of your choosing

              San Francisco: Every Saturday and planning day of your choosing
Hours: 25-32 hours per month
Starting Salary Range: $27-$30 per hour plus mileage reimbursement of $0.67 per mile

BACKGROUND 

The Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) is an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in San Rafael, California. AIM’s mission is to educate, inspire, and connect communities, responsible farmers and producers as part of a healthy, Earth-friendly, equitable local and regional food system. We envision a responsible food and farming system that is environmentally beneficial, economically viable, and socially just. AIM serves 400+ farmers, food purveyors, and artisans from 40 California counties who participate in AIM’s Certified Farmers Markets in the cities of Hayward, Newark, Oakland, Point Reyes, San Rafael, and San Francisco. AIM also provides hands-on and virtual education programs to thousands of children and adults, operates a farm audit program, runs a mobile market for older adults and underserved communities, and operates CalFresh/EBT and Market Match services to create a healthier, equitable food system across the San Francisco Bay Area.

DESCRIPTION 

AIM is recruiting two (2)  dedicated nutrition educators (independent contractors) to work with its Rollin’ Root mobile farmers’ market to promote healthy eating using seasonal produce that customers can expect to find on the Rollin’ Root truck. One educator will work on the Rollin' Root in Marin County, while the other educator will work on the Rollin' Root in San Francisco.  The Rollin’ Root is a food truck stocked with local, seasonal produce, nuts, rice, and dairy products that are sourced 100% from farmers who participate in AIM’s farmers markets. 

Each month, the nutrition educator will look for healthy, tasty, and easy to prepare recipes that will appeal to customers of the Rollin’ Root focused on shoppers on a budget. They will attend each Rollin’ Root stop monthly and participate in special events seasonally to share nutrition lessons, hand out recipe cards, and talk to customers about cooking, produce, and healthy eating. The Nutrition Educator will provide recipe samples and offer seasonal produce tastings for customers.  

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Create quarterly nutrition education plans using SNAP-Ed Nutrition Education curriculum and food systems strategies with the goal of increasing consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by Rollin’ Root customers. 

  • Identify recipes appropriate for the primary audience of Rollin’ Root customers, including older adults and people shopping on a budget. Recipes should be simple to prepare and will feature seasonal items available on The Rollin’ Root. 

  • Communicate with The Rollin’ Root Manager to ensure that recipes feature seasonal fruits and vegetables that are available for purchase at The Rollin’ Root when the recipe is presented.  

  • Present recipes, lessons, and tastings at Rollin’ Root stops monthly and special events as scheduled. 

  • Create a recipe card in English using AIM’s recipe card template and produce Spanish and/or Chinese versions (translations provided). The card will include facts about the highlighted produce, such as nutrition and tips on storage and usage. 

  • Track, record, and report back on participation for each nutrition education lesson and tasting. Other data collection as needed. 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Education: Bachelor’s, Associate’s degree or Certificate in General Nutrition or Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, Human Development, Public Health or Community Nutrition, Health Education, or a related field 

  • 2+ years combined experience in nutrition education, food resource management, agricultural education, or SNAP-Ed Nutrition Education 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, detail-oriented and project management skills; creative problem solver 

  • Must have reliable transportation to various sites is along with the capability to carry bulk materials as necessary; up to about 40 lbs. 

  • Confident and skilled communicator with experience working in diverse communities, with families and elders. 

  • Highly motivated and energetic team player; outgoing, sunny personality with a sense of humor 

  • Strong organizational skills and self-starter 

  • Hold a food handlers’ card (within the first 30 days of contract) 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Familiarity with SNAP/EBT program or SNAP-Ed nutrition education 

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish or English 

  • Networks and relationships with community organizations, schools and food and farming entities in Alameda, San Francisco, and Marin counties
