Overview

Seeking an experienced gardener for a multi-acre private residential estate in San Anselmo to work under the supervision of the Estate Manager and Chef and manage an assistant, rosarian, and gardening vendors. The grounds include an . acre orchard, poolside plantings, extensive culinary beds and small cutting garden. The Estate Gardener will be responsible for various horticultural tasks related to the continued health and productivity of these gardens and plantings, as they will be responsible for supplying the family with fresh organic produce, flowers, and fruit as available, as specified by the family and chef. The Estate Gardener position is full-time, Monday through Friday between 8:30am - 5:30pm, and may require communication outside normal working hours and additional work during events.

General Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations and year-round production of the estate’s culinary and walking gardens.

  • Develop and maintain organic vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower-producing gardens by crafting and implementing a detailed garden maintenance plan.

  • Harvesting all crops, sorting and storing produce, and delivering to the chef in a timely manner following the harvest schedule.

  • Provide the Estate Manager with weekly reports regarding available and upcoming produce, issues relating to the garden, and long-term sustainable garden plans.

  • Troubleshoot irrigation issues and set timers for seasonal crop growth and cycles.

  • Communicate with all managers on the property regarding any significant gardening/land or overlapping issues and repairs that are needed and update the calendar and Notes appropriately.

  • For future reference, keep records of all work carried out in the gardens, such as planting and harvest plans.

  • Label all garden beds, harvests, and rose gardens with referenced support.

  • Maintain a small-scale beekeeping and honey operation and internal composting program.

  • Supervise and manage the Assistant Gardener (track hours, scheduling, etc.) and various outside vendors.

  • Work with the housekeepers to provide cutting flowers for the house when required.

  • Maintain utmost cleanliness (exterior and organizational) of the garden shed and lath house, including cleanliness and inventory of all food containers, tools and garden equipment.

  • Ensure all health and safety and compliance requirements are adhered to, including the use of personal protective equipment and safe working practices.

  • Oversee the budget for the edible garden and orchard.

  • Be available to lead tours of the garden/property for guests/groups and participate in all manager meetings and staff activities (e.g., assembly of holiday gift baskets)

Job Qualifications:

Familiarity with all aspects of organic growing of a wide variety of vegetables, tree fruits, small fruits, herbs, roses, and other flowers is required. The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 5 years of gardening/horticulture experience

  • Must speak, read and write English; bilingual a plus

  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills

  • Knowledge of organic fertilizers and pesticides and their uses.

  • Maintaining the health and fertility of organic soil

  • Successive timing of sowings, plantings, and harvests

  • Knowledge of the pruning & trimming of fruit trees, roses, and many other perennial and annual plants

  • Proper harvesting, handling, and storing of a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers

  • Irrigation (maintaining, designing, and installing both drip and PVC-related components)

  • Greenhouse management and seed starting, composting, and cover cropping.

  • Working and coordinating with others demonstrate leadership, ownership, alacrity, and organizational skills.

  • Strong work ethic, excellent integrity, and a sense of fun and desire to work with a collaborative team and family!

Other experience/knowledge:

  • Basic tractor operation- towing/hauling, front-loader work,

  • Adaptable to different working conditions and able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Reading soil and water tests

  • Beekeeping experience

  • General arboreal knowledge

  • Drying of fruit, herbs, and flowers

  • Basic understanding of Mac and Office computer environments, proficiency in Office Suite and Dropbox.

COMPENSATION:

• $40-$50/hour, depending on experience level.
