MALT + AIM Partner to Deliver Produce to Marin City Residents

For 41 years the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) has been permanently protecting Marin’s agricultural land for agricultural use. Simultaneously, for 38 years, the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) has been providing a market for many of those same farmers and ranchers to sell their products. We’ve been working side-by-side to make sure that local farms and ranches continue to thrive in our region. Our partnership is natural and enduring, and recently we collaborated on an innovative new way to support each other’s missions.

In June MALT contributed $5,000 to AIM’s Rollin’ Root mobile market. The goal of the program is to ensure that all members of our community have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, regardless of transportation or economic barriers. MALT’s grant is providing farmers market produce to Marin City residents experiencing food insecurity as part of the Rollin’ Root’s weekly Thursday route. Now thanks to this new partnership with MALT, it is also delivering 10 pre-packed bags of fresh produce each week to the Marin City Health and Wellness Center for distribution to clients in need. The program will run through December, delivering a total of 300 bags.

One aspect of a healthy local food system is equitable access to fresh food. Unfortunately, fresh, affordable, local food is not readily available to all residents of Marin County. We must collectively work to undo decades of economic and racial inequities and policies that have created these discrepancies in access to fresh food here at home. Together, AIM and MALT are making meaningful progress to make sure that protecting local farmland results in better access to local food for ALL Marin County residents. We recognize this work must be done in concert with our community — and we hope to continue to find innovative ways to partner in the future.

As MALT strives to fulfill its mission to permanently protect Marin’s agricultural land for agricultural use, AIM is committed to reaching its mission to educate, inspire, and connect communities, responsible farmers, and producers as part of a healthy, Earth-friendly, equitable local and regional food system. We’re proud to work together!

You can support this work by visiting the Rollin’ Root at any of its weekly stops — it’s open to the public! CalFresh is accepted with Market Match of up to $10 per visit. Check out the Rollin’ Root schedule here. Or, make a gift on our website!
