CalFresh is a program that provides nutrition assistance to low-income individuals and families in California. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the California Department of Social Services. Eligible participants receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which they can use to purchase food at authorized retail stores, including grocery stores, farmers markets, and other food retailers. The amount of benefits each household receives is based on household size, income, and expenses. CalFresh benefits are intended to help supplement a household's food budget, and can only be used to purchase eligible food items, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, bread, and dairy products.

Market Match is a program that incentivizes CalFresh (SNAP) recipients to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets. When CalFresh recipients use their EBT card to purchase fruits and vegetables at a participating farmers market, they can receive dollar-for-dollar matching funds in the form of Market Match tokens, up to a maximum of $10 per person per day. Market Match tokens can be used to purchase additional fruits and vegetables at the farmers market. This means that CalFresh benefits are stretched further, helping low-income families access healthy, locally grown produce while supporting local farmers.
