Straus Family Creamery was founded in 1994, as a family-owned and operated business, dedicated to make the highest quality and minimally processed organic dairy products. With the dairy and creamery located in the small town of Marshall on the Northern California Coast, it was the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi River and the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States. Straus Family Creamery President Albert Straus is the oldest son of Bill and Ellen Straus, who began their family dairy farm in the early 1940s in Marshall, on the beautiful shores of Tomales Bay. They started out small, with only 23 Jersey cows. Their four children were raised on the ranch, and by the time they reached adulthood, the California dairy industry was in transition and a different, much larger, industrial type of dairy farm had begun to spread. Albert realized that innovative solutions were needed to secure the future of family farming in California and to maintain good stewardship of the land. By going organic in the early 1990s the Straus family was able continue and expand practices reflecting the best form of stewardship in terms of environmental care, care for animals, and quality of life for communities and family farms. Straus Family Creamery has been commercially successful and maintains their high standards of sustainability.
