Position Title: Assistant Farmers Market Manager

Reports To: Senior Market Manager

Hours: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly

BACKGROUND

Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates seven farmers markets in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of its educational mission.  Its mission is to promote a viable food system, to educate the public about the benefits of buying fresh and locally-grown food, and to bring farmers and communities together.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Farmers Market Manager assists the Market Manager in ensuring the effective implementation of all markets run by AIM in the Bay Area. The Assistant Farmers Market Manager plays a key role in fulfilling AIM’s mission, as the farmers markets are the most visible sign of AIM’s presence in the community.

The Assistant Farmers Market Manager assures the smooth operation of AIM’s farmers market by assisting the Market Manager in setup and breakdown of the market and providing excellent customer service at the Information Booth, including vendor stall fee collection and other financial transactions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists Market Manager in securing site, including closing/reopening street/parking lot
  • Assists Manager in setting up and breaking down the market, including AIM market equipment, ATM(s), signage, information booth, restrooms, entertainment, café area(s) and garbage disposal
  • Staffs the information booth, providing excellent customer service and assisting with financial transactions: vendor stall fee payment, sale of merchandise and EBT/Market Match transactions
  • Assists Market Manager with market operations
  • Maintains excellent relations with vendors, customers, staff and local governmental/community organizations and businesses
  • Assists Market Manager with any other tasks that need to be accomplished

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 22 years of age or older
  • Must have valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Physical capacity to repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs, load/unload equipment to/from truck
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and organizational skills, detail-oriented
  • Ability to maintain calm, handle details and multi-task in a busy environment
  • Self-starter with outgoing, sunny personality with a sense of humor
  • Energetic, active person who is also a team player who takes direction well
  • Punctuality and attendance
  • General understanding and/or sincere interest in food and farming
  • Ability to work early mornings and long hours on market days
  • Ability to work weekends

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires regularly lifting 50+ lbs, when setting up and breaking down the market, primarily when:

  • Unloading and loading of market equipment from/to the truck (tables, chairs, canopy, canopy weights, generator, ATM, cones, barricades, A-frames, signage) for customer service information booth/café areas
  • Setting up and breaking down market equipment at information booth and in café areas
  • Disposing of garbage

 

Other Physical Demands

  • Driving of AIM vehicles including trucks and vans
  • Sitting, walking, standing, twisting and bending for extended periods of time
  • Regular reaching and/or grasping using hands and/or arms
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels characteristic of being in a festival environment
  • Hearing and speech to converse in person and over the telephone

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Market Manager.

 

AIM EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Adhere to all AIM Health and Safety policies and procedures, as well as those related to the rules and regulations as they pertain to our customers and vendors.
  • Administer duties as defined by the AIM performance review plan within the required deadlines.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Follow all administrative agency policies and procedures.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality related to vendors, staff, Board and other AIM information.

Academic Student Internship Opportunities in Agricultural Education and Farmers Markets

Mission: Educate the public about the nutritional and economic benefits of buying locally grown food directly from farmers, and to connect and support communities and agriculture.

Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) currently manages seven Certified Farmers Markets and represents over 300 family farms, specialty food purveyors, and artisans in three Bay Area counties. We are committed to quality over quantity when it comes to farmers markets and are working diligently to build the most productive markets for our participating members that best reflect the communities they serve. AIM offers three farm-based education programs: on the farm, in the classroom and at the market. Our goal is to empower youth to make food choices that will positively impact their long-term health. Through AIM’s programs, participants see, taste, and learn about their food first-hand. AIM’s farm-based educational programs engage thousands of children and adults each year.

Position: AIM has an exciting opportunity for three (3) student interns or recent college graduates for practical, hands-on experiences:

  • Education intern
  • Marketing & Communications intern
  • Data and Metrics Intern

Description: Interns will be assigned to complete one or more projects aligned with their academic and career interests in the fields of agricultural education, communications & marketing, or data and metrics. Interns will be assigned a mentor and will receive exposure to working in a fast-paced, mission-driven work environment.

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

 

  1. Education Intern:
  • Create educational materials that are age-appropriate for youth in elementary and middle schools to learn about agriculture and ecosystems.
  • Assist in programming with Education team, which may include co-leading classroom talks and tours of the farmers market or local farms.
  • Assist in planning, writing and managing monthly seasonal recipes for a variety of audiences.
  • Develop content for social media and AIM’s Web site highlighting educational activities.

 

Qualifications:

  • Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Environmental science, agriculture, education, nutrition, public health)
  • Experience in working with school-aged youth
  • Must be computer literate, working knowledge of Word processing, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Has effective written communication skills, can edit copy and note-taking
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner to parents, schools and youth.
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines

 

  1. Marketing & Communications Intern:
  • Gather information and data to assist in creation of highly shareable marketing content
  • Design and implement marketing and informational templates
  • Assist in planning, writing and managing monthly e-newsletter and blog
  • Draft, distribute and pitch news releases, media alerts and chef/farmer stories
  • Reach out to the community, partner organizations, general public, donors with the message about AIM’s mission
  • Assist in marketing and advertising promotional activities (e.g. social media, direct mail and web)
  • Establish a presence on LinkedIn and begin engaging influencers
  • Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions and venues for marketing and communications

 

Qualifications:

  • Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Marketing/Communications, Journalism, Business or Public Relations)
  • Must be computer literate, working knowledge of Word processing, PowerPoint, Excel. Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator is highly desired. Knowledge of HTML and graphic design a plus
  • Has effective written communication skills, can edit copy and note-taking
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with press and community contacts
  • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space or wilingness to learn
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Experience in marketing or communications a plus

 

 

  1. Data & Metrics Intern
  • Gather information and data from farmers market vendors and customers through surveys
  • Conduct visitor counts at markets to measure usage, trends, and patterns
  • Compile data gathered and enter into Web site and database
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to upload and share data gathered
  • Summarize data reports using infographics and fact sheets

Qualifications:

  • Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Marketing/Communications, Sociology, Business, Finance, Economics, or Statistics)
  • Has effective written communication skills, can edit copy and note-taking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner to customers, farmers, and food purveyors
  • Experience in surveys or data analysis a plus
  • Must be able to work Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays to collect data from customers, farmers, and food purveyors

 

Start Date: Position open until filled, requires 3 – 6 month commitment

 

Hours: 8 – 12 hours/week. Preferably twice a week in the office

Compensation: This is an unpaid/volunteer position. Students may be eligible for academic credit or completion of fieldwork requirements.
