Honoring Veterans at the Farmers Market

Honoring Veterans at the Farmers Market
Andy Naja-Riese, CEO

On any given day, a trip to the farmers market presents a unique opportunity for community gathering and learning directly from farmers, ranchers, fishers, and food purveyors about how they produce their food. However, this weekends’ markets represent something special – a time to recognize and thank our U.S. military veterans and service members. In fact, the Marin Farmers Market is adjacent to the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium on the Civic Center campus – a permanent fixture that memorializes our community members who have served in the military.

I want to thank one of AIM’s team members: Hope Rodriguez, the Market Manager of our Hayward Market. After high school, Hope enlisted into the U.S. Army, where she served from September 2005 – July 2014. She was a Staff Sergeant Dental Hygienist and was stationed in Kansas as well as internationally in Korea and Germany. During this time, Hope experienced different cultures from around the world and fulfilled her passion for being part of something bigger than herself. Hope carries that passion and commitment to service to her work at AIM’s Farmers Markets. We thank you for your service, Hope! When you see Hope this weekend at the Hayward Farmers Market, please thank her for her service and wish her “the best day ever.”

In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day Holiday, AIM would also like to recognize and thank the military veterans and military families in our communities, including shoppers, eaters, farmers, food purveyors, artists, and musicians who represent AIM’s Farmers Markets. Stop by any of AIM’s market information booths on Saturday, November 10 at Hayward or Grand Lake – Oakland or on Sunday, November 11 at Stonestown, Newark, Clement St., or Marin and show your U.S. military ID or card for a free reusable tote bag!

Additionally, I’d like to thank and recognize several of AIM’s market participants who served in the U.S. military, including:

Dave Terzolo (U.S. Navy) of Zolo Coffee
Gary Root (U.S. Coast Guard) of Same Day Seafood
Dr. David Jablons (U.S. Navy) of Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery

Several farmers and food purveyors may also be extending their own Veterans’ appreciation to shoppers and eaters at their booths this weekend – feel free to inquire within.
